A few years ago, the Mendoza Zoological Park in Argentina became infamous for keeping Arturo,
the world’s saddest polar bear, in deplorable conditions. Despite
international outcry and calls to have him moved to a facility in
Canada, Arturo passed away before anything was done. Now, animal
advocates can seek solace in the fact that the zoo’s elephants won’t meet a similar fate.
The zoo, which is now under new leadership, officially signed a deal with the Secretary of Environment to voluntarily send its four resident elephants to South America’s first elephant sanctuary, Elephant Sanctuary Brazil.
The four elephants who will soon be leaving their current confines
include two female Asian elephants, Pocha and Guillermina, one male
Asian elephant, Tamy, and one African elephant, Kenia.
Pocha, who is 43-years-old, has been kept in the zoo’s Asian elephant exhibit, which Elephant Sanctuary Brazil likened to a “concrete rat’s maze” with high walls that don’t allow them to see anything except for the sky over their heads.
