486 animals have died here

486 animals have died at South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria in just four years. Two snow leopards were found partially eaten by members of their own species. A kangaroo was described by inspectors as "incredibly emaciated and unwell". Seven healthy lion cubs and five young baboons because there wasn't enough space for them within the confines of this zoo. These are just some examples of the horrific cruelty and neglect inflicted on wild animals at South Lakes Safari Zoo.

The zoo is owned and run by a man named David Gill, who is determined to keep this zoo operational despite so much obvious abuse. Because of the horrifying treatment of his animals, councillors rejected his application to renew his licence to run the zoo, and then also rejected his application for a brand new licence. However, the animals aren't safe from his clutches yet. He has 28 days to appeal the decision, and during that time, the animals remain at the zoo.

Sign Care2 member Sarah's petition to demand the zoo be closed and the animals moved to a humane wildlife sanctuary!

We have to make sure that if David Gill appeals the council's decision, the councillors stick by their word and still refuse to grant him a licence. We also have to make sure they protect the animals that are suffering right now. These animals need to be taken to a reputable wildlife sanctuary that can properly provide for their needs, stop them from eating one another, and ensure that their breeding is controlled.

Inspectors to the zoo have said, "The lack of senior supervision and management is evident throughout the zoo, including the failures of the local veterinary service, leading to deplorable standards, compromised welfare and deaths."

Let's make sure the councillors don't give up now, but push for immediate changes to the animals' living conditions. Sign the petition to ensure that no more animals die at South Lakes Safari Zoo!

Stop the Killing of Slovenia's Wolves, Now!

The Government of Slovenia has just announced that in 2017 it will permit the killing of 10 wolves out of a total estimated population of less than 50. This is in spite of research from the EU-funded SloWolf project which showed that such killing breaks up wolf packs and leads to more attacks on livestock because single wolves are unable to hunt deer effectively. The government claims it listens to the experts, but it seems that the hunting lobby has a large influence here (also shown by the fact that this year 113 brown bears will also be killed or 'removed' from the environment). The wolf is a protected species in Slovenia. This cull should be abandoned immediately.

This Could Be the Happiest Baby Orca Ever

There have been many ups and downs for an endangered group of orcas living in the Pacific Northwest, but a recent sighting of one of the latest newcomers showing off some of her new skills has raised more hope that they may yet be able to make a comeback.

First spotted at the end of December when she was just a few days old, little J50 is one of four new calves recently born among this group of orcas, otherwise known as the southern resident killer whales who live in three distinct pods (J, K and L).

Photographer Clint Rivers captured an incredibly stunning image of her with her family in the waters between San Juan Island and Vancouver Island over Independence Day weekend.

“J50 stole the show, and hearts, with more than 60 breaches as she and her family moved south in Haro Strait. It’s like she just figured out how this breaching thing works and couldn’t stop,” Rivers told Care2.
